Chapter 17

After apologising for his outburst, Colonel Fitzwilliam requested to be excused from the ladies except for Elizabeth and Mr. Bennet moved them to his study for further explanation. The colonel continued, “Bingley said you were at Netherfield and the thought never crossed my mind that you would be the one here at Longbourn, cousin! Who could possibly be at Netherfield pretending to be you? Miss Elizabeth said she found you buried alive and that you had lost your memory. You are Fitzwilliam Darcy but who would dare try to kill you and for what reason? I am going to catch the one responsible for your injury and will have him hanged. As soon as I get to Netherfield, I will arrest the bastard who has been impersonating you.”

The true Darcy frowned, “I know you are my cousin and remember us arguing about something. You were yelling at me and it was about a young lady.”

“Your sister Georgiana,” he replied. “I must set everything straight and will get some new clothes for you. Where is your valet? Were you robbed? How on earth could this have happened to you?” He looked over his cousin and inspected his head.

Elizabeth commented, “Georgiana is your sister’s name? That must be why the name ‘George’ must have sounded familiar to you. What about ‘Michael’, Colonel? Is that name of any significance?”

Richard nodded and replied as he faced Darcy, “Fitzwilliam Michael Darcy is your full name and you are eight and twenty years old. George Darcy and Anne Fitzwilliam Darcy were your parents’ names and your mother passed fifteen years ago and your father, five years ago. I share guardianship of Georgiana with you and you are closer to me than my own brother. My parents are the Earl and Countess of Matlock named Stephen and Helena Fitzwilliam and my older brother is Robert. Your grandfather was the Earl of Matlock and you are third in line for the earldom if Robert and I do not have an heir.”

Elizabeth’s head was spinning that her John was actually Fitzwilliam Darcy and that he was so closely related to nobility. She had thought Mr. Darcy to be an arrogant womaniser and felt relieved that the colonel had arrived to set things right.

“That is right, I am Fitzwilliam Michael Darcy, I now remember, but I am called something else,” Darcy rubbed his temples with his fingers.

“Does your head hurt?” He asked his cousin who nodded and the colonel continued, “I will go slowly. My family and Georgie call you ‘William’ and everyone else calls you ‘Darcy’,” he explained, “and you have ten thousand per annum from Pemberley alone but here you are, in a servant’s clothes with calluses of a workhand.” Richard shook his head, “A great injustice has been committed and I will make it right, William. We had argued last September about your decision to marry our cousin Anne and you said you did not wish to speak to me until after the wedding in the new year.
